happy birthday to me

my day started out really awful... little bear wasn't feeling it when i was dressing him up for school. all the mothers out there will agree with me that it's quite a challenge to wake up, bathe, feed, dress up a 3 year old child and get him to his classroom when the child doesn't feel like getting up from bed. that was exactly the scene in my little world so early in the morning, on my birthday at that. and did i mention he is autistic? one can yell, scream, bluff threats at typically developing 3 year olds but not my little autistic bear... no! no! no! (i'm beginning to sound like him!) he's one feisty little fella who kicks, screams, bites, and such when he doesn't get his way. it's not because he is a brat, but because it is difficult for him to express his needs so he often gets frustrated... typically autistic! it has been a little over a year since his diagnosis and i've learned to deal with that ugly, nasty word that is autism but there are some days when i just wish it wasn't part of my vocabulary, today in particular! he and i had a screaming match which made us late in getting out of the house. arrrgh even putting a diaper on him was an extraordinarily difficult task today... happy birthday to me indeed! we were finally in the car when i realized we had a new driver and a dud at that! he had had had to make adjustments on the car seat, only begin to figure out how to silence the car's alarm system beeping sounds, learn how to drive (?) okay that's an exaggeration but i swear the car went dead a couple of times making us even more late... grrr! we were on the way to little bear's school when we ran into traffic because there was a parade on the street and i was about ready to scream "why me god???" it was so early in the day and everything was going wrong all at the same time! normally i don't mind if little bear is a little late for school, he's just a kid, to hell with what his teachers will think. but today i had plans with my friends (moms of little bear's classmates) and i didn't wanna be late for that. finally we get to his school and it was drizzling and dud driver forgot to put an umbrella inside the car for us to use when we get out of the car, but it was his first day at work so i didn't yell at him for that but me and the nanny had to dash from car to classroom, heavy little boy and all his school stuff in tow. when he was safely inside his special education class, i let out a little sigh of relief and felt like i had just completed a marathon. the rest of the day was pretty much chaotic as always but fun as well. had brunch with friends at max, a darn good restaurant, lunch with the whole family at the mall, and afternoon snacks with relatives at home, and finally, a quiet dinner with my parents and my son. it was pretty much a great birthday in spite of the rough patches here and there and at the end of the day i felt like i am the luckiest girl to have a sleeping bear in my arms. he's sooo soft, like a cloud... touching him, i can only imagine that this must be what heaven feels like. i got lotsa birthday greetings today on facebook and on my mobile phone... got presents from family and friends... received an extra yummy cake from a friend, delivered one day ahead because she forgot the actual date of my birthday (what a true friend... round of applause please!) and i got to talk to the boy that i like... that's just icing on the cake! and so... on the day i turned 34, it wasn't bad at all...
i had my cake and ate it too!!!
best birthday present ever!!!
